Lucy Kemp-Welch, who died 60 years ago this November, was a pioneer woman artist and the illustrator of ‘Black Beauty’. Feted as one of finest painters of horses of her generation and an artist for the Boer War and the First World War, she never acquired the same prestige as her male counterparts.

Dr Geri Parlby, art historian and international lecturer, talks about the life and times of this extraordinary artist who had to fight against a lifetime of discrimination to make her mark as an “animal painter of power”.

Thanks to generous donations, LKW’s ‘In Sight - Lord Dundonald’s Dash on Ladysmith’ (1901) is to be restored in October and takes a prominent place in the Women Artists exhibition opening on 8 December.
